On Saturday, June 27, 2026, Palazzo Collicola in Spoleto officially opened its new exhibition season with a rich program of exhibitions that will accompany visitors throughout the summer and continue until January 10, 2027. To mark the start of the 69th edition of the Festival dei Due Mondi, the museum is presenting three temporary exhibitions alongside the new layout of the permanent collection at the “G. Carandente” Gallery of Modern Art. The calendar also includes other venues of the Spoleto Civic Museums, such as Casa Romana and the MuST – Museum of Science and the Territory.
The initiative is sponsored by the City of Spoleto in collaboration with the Festival dei Due Mondi, the Marignoli Foundation of Montecorona, the Carla Fendi Foundation, the Amici di Palazzo Collicola association, Viaindustriae, Mahler & LeWitt Studios, the Sansi Leonardi Volta Art High School, and the Fabiana Filippi brand, with support from Maggioli Cultura e Turismo. The redesign of the Gallery of Modern Art was also supported by donations collected through the Art Bonus program.
The main floor of Palazzo Collicola hosts *Anafora*, a solo exhibition by Giuseppe Penone, curated by Saverio Verini. The exhibition brings together some of the sculptor’s most significant works, creating a direct dialogue between his creations and the palace’s historic spaces. Welcoming visitors in the Salone d’Onore is the monumental *Albero*, an eleven-meter-tall sculpture that dominates the space. In the Gallery on the main floor, the works are arranged in front of the large windows. The exhibition’s title, *Anafora*, evokes this rhythmic succession of elements that guides visitors along the route. The tribute to Penone extends beyond Palazzo Collicola thanks to a project promoted by the Carla Fendi Foundation in collaboration with the Festival dei Due Mondi, the Civic Museums of Spoleto, and the Studio Giuseppe Penone. In Piazza Pianciani, “Le foglie delle radici” will be installed—an imposing bronze sculpture previously exhibited in prestigious venues such as Versailles and the Boboli Gardens, and also chosen as the symbolic image for the 69th edition of the Festival. Meanwhile, in the Battistero della Manna d’Oro, *Epheměris* will be inaugurated—a selection of seven videos curated by Saverio Verini that explores the artist’s creative process and his ongoing dialogue with nature, gesture, and the transformation of matter. The exhibitions dedicated to Penone will be accompanied by a catalog published by ViaIndustriae.
The ground-floor spaces also host *Grande assurdo*, Adelaide Cioni ’s first solo exhibition in an Italian public institution, also curated by Saverio Verini. Created specifically for Palazzo Collicola, the exhibition project transforms each room into an autonomous universe populated by geometric shapes, organic elements, recurring symbols, and imaginary presences. Using materials such as fabric, wood, and plaster, the artist creates an immersive experience that engages with the museum’s architecture, altering the perception of the spaces and inviting the public on a journey of continuous discovery.
Also on the ground floor is *Un salto nel vuoto*(A Leap into the Void), an exhibition dedicated to Filippo Marignoli on the occasion of the centennial of his birth. Organized by the Marignoli Foundation in Montecorona, the exhibition traces the main stages of the artist’s painterly exploration through a selection of works that illustrate his stylistic evolution and his contribution to the Spoleto Group and to Italian art of the late 20th century. The exhibition is curated by Peter Benson Miller, with a contribution by Davide Ferri and in collaboration with Susan Sayre Batton, and is produced in partnership with Mahler & LeWitt Studios.
The second floor of the museum, meanwhile, features the revamped layout of the “G. Carandente” Gallery of Modern Art, coordinated by Saverio Verini. The new exhibition layout aims to highlight the deep connection between Spoleto and contemporary art, showcasing the figures who have helped transform the city into one of Italy’s and the world’s leading artistic centers. The collection includes works by major figures of the 20th century such as Alexander Calder, Leoncillo, Sol LeWitt, Beverly Pepper, Pino Pascali, David Smith, Anthony Caro, Alberto Burri, Carla Accardi, and Pietro Consagra. The redesign introduces new thematic galleries, updated educational materials, and numerous works from the museum’s storage, as well as important loans from the Bonomo family, Intesa Sanpaolo, the Gnoli Archive, the Beverly Pepper Projects Foundation, and the Estate of Anna Mahler. This project was made possible thanks to the support of numerous patrons, local businesses, and donors who participated in the Art Bonus program, helping to breathe new life into the permanent collection and make the visitor experience even more engaging and accessible.
