As part of the exhibition Surrealism and Magic. Enchanted Modernity on view through September 26, 2022 at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and curated by Grazina Subelyte, the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni museum venue is organizing a comprehensive program of events and collateral activities, Public Programs, related to the themes of the exhibition and intended for various audiences. The events will start from the exhibition itinerary to divulge, deepen and analyze the main themes, such as the occult, magic, alchemy, the oneiric and the unconscious; they will be completely free of charge and made possible thanks to the Araldi Guinetti Foundation, Vaduz.

Launched in April, the Public Programs continue in May and will talk about fluidity and transformation. It starts on May 5 at 6 p.m., a date when teachers will be able to take a guided tour with the curator, which will be held both in-person and remotely, with the aim of delving into the key concepts of the exhibition, including the themes of fluidity and metamorphosis. OnMay 11 at 6 p.m., the public is invited instead to participate in the webinar Living with Leonora, in which journalist and writer Joanna Moorhead, cousin of the surrealist artist Leonora Carrington, will explore with the curator some of the events in the artist’s history, including episodes, links and connections to Peggy Guggenheim’s life. On May 17 at 6 p.m., the curator will be in conversation with Cecilia Alemani, artistic director of the 59th Venice Biennale: in an online meeting they will explore the theme of hybridization and metamorphosis in art, not only with reference to the Surrealist movement, but also investigating the latest artistic research concerning the contemporary. On May 26 and 27, instead, young people between the ages of 16 and 25 will be the protagonists of the workshop Naked lobsters: undisciplined musesÉ™, curated by Call Monica, a collective born from the Theatre and Performing Arts course at the Iuav University of Venice. Call Monica will accompany participants in a two-day workshop intended to be a journey of self-knowledge and an analysis of the gaze, understood as a cultural construction and vector of power. The workshop will end with a performance in the spaces of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

The events will continue in June, dedicated to the figure of themagician artist capable of changing the world. On June 23 at 6 p.m. there will be a webinar The Artist as Magician and Enchanter, with Alice Mahon, professor of modern and contemporary art at the University of Cambridge, Susan Aberth, professor of Art History at Bard College in New York, and curator of the exhibition Surrealism and Magic Grazina Subelyte. On June 28 and 29, however, there will be a Multilayer Surrealism workshop designed for young people between the ages of 16 and 25, in collaboration with BigRock. Institute of Magic Technologies, the largest animation school in Italy. Together with Big Rock’s creatives, the workshop is proposed as an essential moment to reflect on the creative power of the mind and the ability to create alternative dimensions, also thanks to current digital tools.

The Public Programs cycle will close in September, dedicated to the theme of dreams. On September 15 at 6 p.m. the public will be invited to participate in the webinar Dream, Myth and Desire. The Dream Imaginary in the Work of Leonora Carrington, Leonor Fini, Dorothea Tanning and Remedios Varo, led by the curator and Giulia Ingarao, professor of Contemporary Art History and author of Leonora Carrington. A Journey through the Twentieth Century. From the Surrealist Dream to the Magic of Mexico. Finally, on September 21, young people between the ages of 16 and 25 will be featured in the drawing workshop The Color of My Dreams, held by French illustrator Laura Daniel.

But that’s not the end of the story. Some of the Sunday workshops designed for children ages 4 to 10 will also be inspired by the current exhibition. From April through September, one Kids Day per month will follow the different themes of the Public Programs. It begins on May 10 with A Woman Feeding the Moon Inside a Lantern Lost in the Night Sky, a workshop that will provide an opportunity to become familiar with surrealist works by decoding their iconology and symbolic meanings. It continues on May 15 with Hybrid Beings in a Genderless World, which will invite visitors to discover the magical beings that populate the exhibition. On June 12, it will be the turn of Magic! I’ve seen things you humans..., a workshop that will aim to make the invisible visible, while on Sept. 25 the appointment will be with I sogni son desideri!, an enchanted workshop in which everyone will share their ambitions or exorcise their fears. Kids Days are free of charge and require reservations starting the Monday before each appointment.
