Uffizi: a virtual exhibition and short videos among the galleries' masterpieces telling the story of Easter

The Uffizi Galleries offers video insights into five masterpieces related to Easter and a virtual exhibition entirely dedicated to the holiday.

On the occasion of Easter, the Uffizi Galleries will illustrate five masterpieces dedicated to the holiday through one video a day conducted by specialists at the Florentine museum headquarters. Works by Rubens, Fra’ Bartolomeo, Pontormo and other lesser-known masters will be featured in five focuses on the Galleries’ social Facebook channel.

The initiative will kick off on Thursday, April 9, from the Gallery of Modern Art in Palazzo Pitti with Antonio Ciseri ’sEcce Homo presented by Cristian Spadoni. On April 10, the Shaped Cross with scenes from the Passion of Christ made by the 13th-century artist known as Master of the Cross 432, kept in the first room of the Gallery of Statues and Paintings at the Uffizi, will be shown: Paola Burberi will delve into the work. The next day will go to the Palatine Gallery in the Pitti Palace accompanied by Maria Spanò who will illustrate Fra’ Bartolomeo’s Lamentation over the Dead Christ. On Easter Day, the famous Risen Christ by Rubens, exhibited in the Imperial and Royal Palace of the Pitti Palace, will be presented by Monica Alderotti. The virtual tour will conclude on Monday, April 13, with Pontormo’s Supper at Emmaus, explained by Alberica Barbolani da Montauto.

The Uffizi Galleries’ official website also features a virtual exhibition entirely dedicated to the Easter story, with a collection of 42 high-definition images of works on the theme held at the Galleries, including paintings by Titian, Perugino, Giottino and Rubens, among others.

“This year, museums have to keep their doors closed, but the Uffizi Galleries are opening to the virtual public,” commented Gallery Director Eike Schmidt, “and to reach out to all art lovers, we will be present with various initiatives on our website, on social media Instagram and Twitter, and on Facebook with videos featuring our masterpieces illustrated by museum assistants. Our hope is to spread, through art and the beauty of our collections, the deeper meaning of these days.”
