A name for the new blue

In 2009 a new shade of blue was discovered by a University of Oregon student: the YInMn Blue. Now held a contest to name it.

Naming a new color is not so usual-that’s what all British and American children will be able to do through a contest closing June 2.

It is a new, very intense and bright shade of blue discovered accidentally in 2009 by aUniversity of Oregon student while he was studying how to make a fiber with high electrical conductivity. By mixing yttrium, indium and manganese oxides and putting the mixture in an oven, the student obtained a mush having a blue color he had never seen before; his professor Mas Subramanian immediately realized that this could be a new discovery.

Today the new shade of blue has been officially recognized, but it lacks a name.

The name YInMn Blue derived from its chemical components has been used to identuify it, but with the competition held soon a suitable name will be found for the new blue.

Consider that the last shade of blue was discovered in 1802 by French chemist Louis Jacques Thénard: cobalt blue.
