Bari, cathedral walls scarred

Vandals deface the walls of the Cathedral of San Sabino in Bari, one of the symbols of Apulian Romanesque architecture.

The Cathedral of San Sabino in Bari again targeted by vandals. In recent days, in fact, a new act of vandalism has had to be recorded against the ancient house of worship (it dates back to the 12th-13th centuries and is one of the main examples of Apulian Romanesque architecture): red marks have appeared on one of the side walls (the one facing Odegitria Square), a sort of improvised goal for a street soccer game. The perpetrators of the gesture are unknown.

Local associations have long denounced the degraded state of the Cathedral area, which is located in the city’s historic center. “The Cathedral,” Michele Fanelli, president of the ACLI Dalfino Circle, told the media, “has once again become a kind of parking area. In fact, the pilomat has been out of order since before Christmas. Even with the presence of the post with the military, we unfortunately denounce a state of degradation and abandonment of the area. The presence of a vigilant to control the square and the very important religious monument would be useful.”
