Carabinieri recover stolen De Chirico painting

Carabinieri from the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit have recovered a Giorgio De Chirico painting stolen nearly 50 years ago.

The Carabinieri Cultural Heritage Protection Command has found Giorgio De Chirico’s "Horse with Mane in the Wind," which was stolen nearly 50 years ago.The work, an oil on canvas, was stolen in Cortina D’Ampezzo from the residence of a well-known local hotelier, and, in October 2017, was spotted by the military at a major London auction house after monitoring the online art market where the painting was about to be put up for sale for as low as £35,000 (€40,000).

A convicted felon delivered the loot to the Milan branch of the London auction house, which, in turn, had applied for and obtained its certificate of free circulation. The Data Bank of Illicitly Misappropriated Cultural Property then ascertained the authenticity of the painting. The painting was repatriated these days and will be returned to its rightful owner once the formalities have been completed by the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office.
