Fragments of a large eight-meter statue allegedly depicting Ramses II found

Outstanding discovery in Egypt: a team of archaeologists has uncovered the remains of an eight-meter-high statue that would likely depict Pharaoh Ramses II

According to Egyptian authorities, it is one of the most important discoveries in the country: a team of Egyptian and German archaeologists has found near the ruins of the temple of Ramses II, where Heliopolis once stood, parts of a huge statue about eight meters high that would probably depict Ramses II himself, the pharaoh who ruled Egypt more than 3,000 years ago.

The team responsible for the discovery said they saw submerged in water the torso and part of the head, later the crown, the right ear and a fragment of the right eye, and said the statue was composed of quartzite. Archaeologists also found the upper part of an 80-cm statue depicting Seti II, grandson of Ramses II.

If the fragments of the large eight-meter statue are confirmed to be a depiction of Ramses II they will be displayed at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, scheduled to open in 2018.
