Here is a digital guide to discovering the Guglielmo Cross in Sarzana, the first dated cross in art history

A multimedia totem illustrating the Cross of William, the first dated cross in art history, has arrived in Sarzana.

The Cross of William, a masterpiece from 1138 preserved in the Cathedral of Sarzana (La Spezia) and the first dated painted cross in the history of art, is one of the most important works ever and is mentioned in all art history manuals(you can read our detailed in-depth study of the work here). As of last month, there is one more tool for learning about this extraordinary achievement: it is the new Digital Guide to Reading the Cross of William, presented last Friday, November 30, on the occasion of the feast of Sarzana’s patron saint, St. Andrew.

In fact, in the chapel that houses the Cross inside the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, a multimedia totem has been installed that, through images and texts created ad hoc, allows people to see the work down to its minutest details, delve into its religious significance, and learn about its historical relevance and artistic value. The same totem will also offer visitors information about the other countless treasures kept in Sarzana Cathedral (one of the most artistically significant churches in all of Liguria) and the heritage preserved in the nearby Diocesan Museum.

The totem was made possible thanks to the support of the Carispezia Foundation.
