The Museo Civico delle Cappuccine in Bagnacavallo (Ravenna) is hosting the exhibition Tinin Mantegazza. The Seven Lives of an Irreverent Creative, organized in collaboration with the Fondazione Tito Balestra Onlus and Accademia Perduta/Romagna Teatri and scheduled until Sunday, July 7, 2019. The review, which opened last April 27, is the first major anthological exhibition dedicated to Tinin Mantegazza (Varazze, 1931), a character whose creative inventions marked Italian culture after World War II. The exhibition, curated by Diego Galizzi and Flaminio Balestra, traces the career of the artist, most famous for having created the puppet Dodò, the friendly talking bird of the children’s program L’Albero Azzurro: 250 original drawings, paintings, puppets, photographs, films, and documents to reconstruct a career that ranged from children’s illustration to social and political criticism.

Then there is space for the cultural animator Mantegazza, who was decisive in the explosion of the Milanese cabaret phenomenon: in the La Muffola gallery, opened in Milan in 1960, evenings were also held with entertainers that gained a certain amount of public acclaim and were the basis for the birth of one of the most popular theatrical genres of recent years. Mantegazza recalls that that experience was lived “with little business sense” but helped create an environment frequented by artists such as Fontana and Pericoli and enlivened in the evenings by the up-and-coming Lauzi, Gaber, Jannacci, and Cochi and Renato.

The exhibition not only looks back at the past and the countless traces Mantegazza left us of his inventiveness, but also tries to keep up with his most recent work as a draftsman and writer, which he fires incessantly from his home-studio overlooking Cesenatico’s harbor. In addition, several special events will take place in the museum’s cloister during the exhibition’s opening period, bringing to Bagnacavallo personalities from the world of children’s theater and television who have accompanied Mantegazza throughout his career, such as Claudio Madia and Claudio Cavalli of the show L’Albero Azzurro. And again, a show by well-known Zelig comedian Flavio Oreglio will tell the extraordinary story of cabaret.

The show can be visited during the opening hours of the Capuchin Museum: Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon and 3 to 6 p.m., Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to noon and 3 to 7 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
