It may indeed be by Giorgione the uncertain portrait that will be on display from October in Castelfranco

According to scholar Augusto Gentili, the portrait from a private Venetian collection that will be exhibited in Castelfranco Veneto starting Oct. 27 may be by Giorgione.

A portrait attributed to Giorgione that experts have been wondering about for years has arrived in Italy : it will be on display at the exhibition "The Plots of Giorgione," scheduled in Castelfranco Veneto at the Casa Giorgione Museum from October 27, 2017 to March 4, 2018. Scholar Augusto Gentili, an expert on everything related to the Castelfranco Veneto artist , has examined the work, reserving an essay for it in the catalog: it may be one of Giorgione’s earliest works, when he was still searching for his way.

Digging into the past, Gentili reaches back to the 1930s, when the painting was in a private collection in Paris and even then experts wondered who the author was, although Giorgione’s name was still credited. After being considered a “circle” product in Richter’s (1937) and Morassi ’s (1942) Giorgionemonographs , the portrait ended up being exhibited inVenice at the “Giorgione and the Giorgioneschi” exhibition in 1955.

According to Gentili, the portrait was made by Giorgione in the early 1500s: a painter therefore at the beginning of his career, already innovative but still rather uncertain. Should the hypothesis receive credence, it would be a work of great importance because it would be a further piece attesting to the beginnings of one of the most mysterious artists in the history of art.

The work, therefore, will be on display at the exhibition dedicated to the artist that will take place at theHouse of Giorgione in Castlelfranco Veneto from October 27, 2017 to March 4, 2018, curated by Danila Dal Pos, who points out that the work, belonging to a private Venetian collection, “has returned to Italy after having been in French and American collections. Although present and mentioned in various old catalogs and monographs on Giorgione, few have had the opportunity to admire it in an exhibition. I am convinced that this exhibition can offer the ideal opportunity for a discussion among experts on Giorgione and early 16th-century Veneto art, in order to arrive at a serious study of this painting that tradition attributes to the Master of Castelfranco.” Information on the msotra can be found at www.letramedigiorgione.it.
