Milan Opens the Courtyards of the State Archives: Collaboration with the Touring Club Begins

Starting June 27, the Milan State Archives will open its doors to the public with the help of volunteers from the Italian Touring Club as part of the “Aperti per Voi” project. The initiative is part of a five-year agreement that will also involve Rome, Naples, and Palermo.

The initiative aimed at making the State Archives increasingly accessible and integrated into the cultural life of cities is kicking off in Milan. On Saturday, June 27, the State Archives of Milan will inaugurate its public openings, organized in collaboration with the Touring Club Italiano (TCI) and the “Aperti per Voi” project, becoming the first of the four participating institutions to benefit from the support of TCI volunteers.

The initiative will allow visitors to freely access—without the need for a reservation—the recently renovated courtyards of the historic Palazzo del Senato, located at Via Senato 10. The open house sessions will take place every Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and every Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The building, home to the State Archives since 1886 and formerly the Swiss College, is one of the city’s historic landmarks and is now expanding its cultural offerings through new ways of engaging both residents and visitors.

The project marks the first concrete implementation of the five-year agreement signed last April by the General Directorate of Archives of the Ministry of Culture and the Italian Touring Club. The agreement, signed by the Director General of Archives, Antonio Tarasco, and the Vice President of the Italian Touring Club, Giuseppe Roma, aims to enhance the State Archives’ historic sites through volunteer activities and to promote greater awareness of the national documentary heritage.

The Milan initiative is also part of a program dedicated to the accessibility and revitalization of the Palazzo del Senato, promoted by the General Directorate of Archives in collaboration with the State Property Agency. The goal is to make the State Archives increasingly open and inclusive spaces, capable of combining heritage preservation, the dissemination of knowledge, and public participation. Following Milan, the project will be gradually expanded to the State Archives in Rome, Naples, and Palermo.
