It is a tempera on panel painting measuring 42 centimeters by 33 centimeters, traditionally attributed to Leonardo da Vinci (Vinci, 1452 - Amboise, 1519), but according to many scholars executed with extensive use of artists from his workshop or circle, and according to others even not executed by the great Tuscan artist, but by a painter close to him: the most popular name is Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio (Milan, 1467 - 1516). The Hermitage purchased the painting in 1865 from Duke Antonio Litta Visconti Arese.

The Litta Madonna will be exhibited from November 8, 2019 to February 10, 2020 as part of the exhibition Around Leonardo. The Litta Madonna and the Master’s Workshop. The Milano Leonardo 500 palimpsest is a series of events to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo, who also left important traces in Milan such as theLast Supper and the decorations of the Sala delle asse at Castello Sforzesco.
