Annick Lemoine is the new president of the Public Institute of Museums Musée d’Orsay and Musée de l’Orangerie - Valéry Giscard d’Estaing. In recent months the post had been held on an interim basis by Julia Beurton, who took over after the sudden death of Sylvain Amic, who had led the two institutions from 2024 to 2025 until his death on Aug. 31, 2025.
General Conservator of the Heritage of the City of Paris and a doctorate in art history, Annick Lemoine began her professional career in academia, teaching at the University of Paris-Sorbonne. There she discussed a thesis devoted to Nicolas Régnier, delving into his role as a painter and art dealer in 17th-century Italy. After several years of university teaching, she joined the staff of Minister of Culture Frédéric Mitterrand in 2009 as a consultant in charge of education, arts education and art history. The following year, she was appointed head of the art history department at the Academy of France in Rome; in 2015, she took over as scientific director of the Art History Festival, jointly promoted by the National Institute of Art History and the Château de Fontainebleau.
His path at the helm of museum institutions continued in 2018 with the direction of the Cognacq-Jay Museum, followed in February 2022 by his appointment as head of the Petit Palais - Museum of Fine Arts of the City of Paris. In this role, he promoted a dynamic and inclusive idea of the museum, understood not only as a place of excellence and research, but also as a space for sharing and transmitting knowledge. His tenure was distinguished by major exhibitions, including those dedicated to Sarah Bernhardt, Ribera, Worth, Rousseau, Greuze, and Pekka Halonen.
As director of the Musée d’Orsay and Musée de l’Orangerie, Annick Lemoine will give continuity to the work started by Sylvain Amic. Priorities will include improving the visitor experience and focusing on welcoming diverse audiences, particularly the younger generations, in a museum open to dialogue with contemporary society and the international context. It will also oversee the significant upgrades to the reception areas, scheduled to begin in fall 2026, while ensuring the security of the institution. He will also reinforce the territorial action initiated by his predecessor, promoting the circulation of works within French museums, and consolidate the institution’s international dimension through partnerships with museum realities around the world, in line with the richness of the collections and the scientific and cultural project of the two museums.
