Performance theft at MAMbo: man cuts wall with chainsaw and takes away work by Aldo Giannotti

A man showed up at MAMbo in Bologna with a chainsaw and took away a work by Aldo Giannotti by cutting a piece of wall.

Aldo Giannotti ’s solo exhibition titled Safe and Sound set up at MAMbo - Museum of Modern Art in Bologna opened on May 5, and already a work has been “stolen” from the exhibition itinerary. Yesterday, Sunday, May 9, a man showed up at the museum venue with a chainsaw in his hand and literally cut a work of art from the wall, almost accomplishing a contemporary art performance. A “theft” occurred before the eyes of all those who were visiting the recently opened exhibition.

The work in question is a drawing depicting precisely a large chainsaw, underneath which Giannotti had written in English, “This drawing can be freely taken by a collector if he shows up with a chainsaw and cuts a piece of wall.” And so it happened: the man cut the piece of wall and walked out of the museum with the drawing.

Aldo Giannotti posted video and photos of the “theft” on his Facebook page and commented, “In Bologna they were cutting murals out of the city walls and taking them inside museums. Yesterday we cut them out of museums to get them out.”
