Pompeii: frescoes discovered on the counter of a thermopolis, the fast food restaurant of the ancient Romans

Frescoes decorating the counter of a thermopolis have been discovered in Pompeii's Regio V. An image on Massimo Osanna's Instagram profile made this known.

A photo has appeared on the Instagram profile of Massimo Osanna, until early January 2019 director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, in which the discovery of some frescoes in Regio V is made known. These decorated the counter of a thermopolis, a kind of refreshment place where ready-made food and drinks suitable for quick meals in use in classical antiquity were prepared: it could be called the fast food of the ancient Romans.

Looking at the published image, the frescoes appear to be in very good condition, so much so that it is possible to advance the hypothesis that an Apollo Citaredo, or zither player, is depicted; in fact, the instrument is clearly visible in the hands of the half-naked figure depicted in the fresco, pictured, right.

However, more information is awaited from archaeologists.
