Pompeii, reopening with discovery: decorated vault of a cryptoporticus found

The Pompeii Archaeological Park returned to visit yesterday and has already provided surprises: from the excavations of the suburban villa of Civita Giuliana, where archaeologists returned to work this week (the villa is located north of the excavation area, outside the walls of the archaeological site), the vault of a large cryptoporticus yet to be explored has in fact emerged, bearing the name a child graffitied on a wall, “Mummy.”

The villa, in fact, probably belonged to a general or a very high military magistrate, perhaps even to a member of the Mummii (one of the gens, or families, most prominent in Pompeii at the time), as the name graffitied on the wall by a child’s hand and on the inscriptions on which a detailed study is now being carried out seems to tell. The villa was only partially damaged by the earthquake tremors that preceded the eruption of AD 79. The uncovered vault has fine decorations: particularly surprising is the white flower that stands out from the black background of the wall.

The suburban villa of Civita Giuliana was the subject of the joint operation launched between the Torre Annunziata Public Prosecutor’s Office with Prosecutor Pierpaolo Filippelli, the Carabinieri and the Park, which led, in March 2018, to the discovery of a series of service rooms and a stable on the estate where a cast of a thoroughbred horse had been made. In the first phase of excavation, a wooden manger had been identified of which a cast could be made, the intact remains of a horse, and the legs of a second animal. Excavation operations, then, brought to light that environment in its entirety and identified the remaining part of the second horse and a third equid, with the remains of a rich military trappings.
