Rome, maintenance work completed at the Casino Nobile of Villa Torlonia

Maintenance work completed on the Casino Nobile of Villa Torlonia in Rome: a neoclassical-style building that is among the Villa's most significant pieces of architecture.

Nearly two decades after it was first opened to the public in 2006, the Casino Nobile of Villa Torlonia in Rome is being returned to the city in its 19th-century appearance as a noble villa. In fact, maintenance work, begun in October 2025 and carried out by Zètema Progetto Cultura on behalf of the Capitoline Superintendency, has been completed.

A building in neoclassical style, the Casino owes its current layout to the interventions of various architects and artists active since the early 19th century, among whom the contribution of Giuseppe Valadier stands out. The dramatic entrance cordonade and the colonnaded elevation, dominated by an imposing tympanum, define its monumental image. In the center of the pediment stands the terracotta high relief by Rinaldo Rinaldi, depicting Bacchus returning from the Indies, which has recently undergone careful restoration.

Inserted among the most significant architectures of the Villa, the Casino Nobile preserves in its interior representative rooms and richly decorated halls, evidence of the taste and formal language of the period. The intervention involved the facades and all projecting architectural decorations, as well as the complete recovery of the high relief. Wooden fixtures were also the subject of maintenance, with overhaul operations and partial replacement of shutters and gates.

The restoration is part of a broader and more articulated program of enhancement of Villa Torlonia that has been underway for some time. Among the most significant interventions are the opening to the public, in 2024, of the bunker used as a shelter during World War II, set up with a site-specific and immersive itinerary, and the reopening in 2025 of the Roman School Museum, renovated with a new layout featuring more than 150 works created between World War I and World War II.

Finally, special attention was paid to the care of greenery and the environment, in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Protection. The interventions have included the resurfacing of some of the interior pathways, the securing of endangered trees, and a comprehensive project to reinstate historic essences, which will see the replacement of a substantial number of plants by February 2026, including Quercus ilex, Pinus halepensis, Pinus pinea, Cupressus sempervirens and Cedrus libani.

Casino Nobile and Roman School Museum hours: Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
