Rome, Mausoleum of Augustus will reopen in spring. Here's how the area will be landscaped

In Rome, the Mausoleum of Augustus, the tomb, built starting in 28 B.C. in the aftermath of the victorious Battle of Actium, built to house the remains of Augustus, the first emperor, will reopen in spring. The monument (87 meters in diameter, 45 in height), which over the centuries has since been put to various uses (it was also used as a fortress and as a theater), is heading toward the final stages of restoration: the investment has exceeded 10 million euros, with 6.5 provided by the Tim Foundation (which at the Mausoleum of Augustus set the now well-known TV commercial starring Riccardo Muti) and 4.275 by the City Council and the Ministry of Culture.

The restoration project (an archaeological walkway will also be planned) is signed by architect Francesco Cellini, winner in 2006 of an international competition announced at the time by the City of Rome, when Walter Veltroni was mayor. It provides for two phases: one of consolidation of the structures and one of enhancement, which will lead to the creation of recovering a now degraded piece of Rome. From this point of view, there are also plans to build a large staircase from the level of the Mausoleum to the Ara Pacis: a unified area will be created between the two monuments. The project, moreover, includes the restoration of the Italian garden wanted in the 16th century by Cardinal Francesco Soderini (Florence, 1453 - Rome, 1524) and the recovery of the ancient paving from the 1st century AD. This will be complemented by exhibition routes that will tell the history of the area (they will be created directly inside the Mausoleum) and a cafeteria. Thus, the idea is to create a vast pedestrian area that will return an area of great historical value to the city.

“The Mausoleum,” reads the presentation on the Mausoleum’s official website itself, “must once again become part of city life.” So, “the square and the monument will return to being what they have always represented: the meeting of past and present that makes Rome one of the most beautiful cities in the world.”
