Sammezzano Castle is among the seven most endangered sites in Europe

Sammezzano Castle has been included in the 7 Most Endangered program: it is now among the seven most endangered sites in Europe.

Already included in the fourteen most endangered places in Europe, Sammezzano Castle has now become part of the 7 Most Endangered, the EU program aimed at identifying the seven most endangered cultural sites in Europe and mobilizing public and private entities to ensure their recovery.

The nomination for the 7 Most Endangered had taken place in July 2019, through Imago Mundi Onlus, a cultural association in Cagliari that is also the creator of Monumenti aperti, Sardinia’s most significant festival dedicated to the promotion and enhancement of cultural heritage. The program is immediately supported by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, the Region of Tuscany, the Municipality of Reggello, the Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximenes D’Aragona Committee and Kairos Srl.

The project will then involve the activation of a team of professionals composed of cultural heritage experts from Europa Nostra, the pan-European federation for cultural heritage that notified the inclusion of Sammezzano in the 7 Most Endangered, and finance experts from the European Investment Bank. These will meet on site with key public and private stakeholders and together identify possible sources of funding and plans for action, helping to mobilize other stakeholders potentially interested in Sammezzano’s recovery. Technical and financial recommendations on which future actions can be directed will also be identified and made public.

In addition to Sammezzano Castle, the National Theatre of Albania (Albania), Castle Jezerí (Czech Republic), Y-block - Government Quarter (Norway), Szombierki Power Plant (Poland), Belgrade Fortress and its surroundings (Serbia), and Plecnik Stadium (Slovenia) will participate in 7 Most Endangered.
