Three Roman marble heads found at Aquinum. One may depict Julius Caesar

At Aquinum, in the municipality of Castrocielo (Frosinone), three marble heads from Roman times have been found. One possibly depicts Julius Caesar.

At Aquinum, a colony that stood along the Via Latina between Rome and Capua, three marble heads from the Roman era have been found. The discovery is thanks to the team of archaeologists from theUniversity of Salento directed by Professor Giuseppe Ceraudo, professor of Ancient Topography and Archaeological Aerotopography, and was made possible through the use of drones. One of these heads is presumed to depict Julius Caesar, the second, a bearded male figure, appears to depict Heracles, and the third depicts an austere female face with a veiled head. For Giuseppe Ceraudo, “this is an exceptional discovery, especially if the identity of the male figure we are working on is confirmed.”

Excavations at Aquinum have been going on for ten years now, which, according to Ceraudo, have been “carried on since the late 1990s to make an archaeological map of the site.” For Ceraudo, Aquinum “is the largest and most important Roman center along the Via Latina, excluding Rome and Capua.” Aquinum is a vast Roman colony discovered in Castrocielo, a municipality of about 4,000 inhabitants, located in the province of Frosinone, in the historical area known as Alta Terra di Lavoro.

At this site there was a thermal building of enormous dimensions. The discovery of a mosaic inscription also revealed the name of the magistrate, Marcus Vecchio, who became mayor of Aquinum, “who had the whole complex built at his own expense for having attained the other office.” The discovery of the three heads was announced in a tweet by Lazio Region President Nicola Zingaretti: “Beautiful discovery in the archaeological area of Aquinum, in the province of Frosinone: 3 marble heads from the Roman era have been found. Happy to have lent a hand by supporting the local community in this walk through history. And by the sounds of it, it seems to be just the beginning!”
