Tomb dating back to the 4th century BC discovered among the Sassi of Matera.

In the area of Matera's Maria SS. della Bruna Cathedral, a 4th-century B.C. tomb with intact grave goods has been discovered: a series of symposium vessels.

In the area of Matera’s Maria SS. della Bruna Cathedral, a burial site dating back to the 4th century B.C. was found during work aimed at securing some of the rooms of the bishop’s seminary.

The discovery was made by construction workers who found a tomb in the tuffaceous bank of the Civita. Inside the latter was found a trousseau with a series of symposium vessels, presumably of Apulian provenance, completely intact.

The Soprintendenza Archeologia delle Belle Arti e del Paesaggio of Basilicata has arranged for the scientific direction of the excavation of the tomb and the archaeological survey of the area, a task that will be entrusted to two specialized archaeologists appointed by the Archdiocese of Matera-Irsina.

“An exceptional discovery that adds a new fundamental piece to the knowledge of the history of the ancient peopling of this urban sector, for which discoveries that took place in the last century are already known and can be traced back to the same chronological horizon,” the Superintendency said.
