I remember well that hot afternoon when for the first time with Gianluca we went to see the Project room at MudaC. Upon crossing the threshold of the room, the first impression was very bad! The small room on the second floor was cluttered with chairs, the best wall was “eaten up” by a large black television, the white and gray marble checkerboard floor, the air conditioner... in addition, the room did not have a lighting system adequate for its intended purpose, not to mention the classic set of safety furnishings in accordance with the law...
I remember looking into each other’s eyes, and the first thing we thought was, “let’s leave it alone.”
But it was too easy to walk away without even trying to put our heads over it. So we began to reason, and one thing was immediately clear: we had to work on the space. There, it was not possible to do otherwise, hanging paintings on the walls or putting pre-existing sculptures on bases was not going to work in any way. One had to experience this as a challenge, an opportunity to push the envelope. I remember that Gianluca decided to embrace the challenge by pandering to the characteristics of the space starting with one of its most distinctive elements: the checkerboard floor. While I still did not know how, I felt a physical desire to break into that space. That first visit was followed by many others, and, to be fair, it must be said that some things have changed in the room, slowly making it more suitable for exhibitions.
Saturday, June 14 saw the opening of Gianluca Sgherri’s exhibition Universe, which will be on view until September 28. The set Gianluca has put together for this occasion presents his work by restoring the complexity of his nearly 40-year journey through a fresh, unprecedented and self-mocking look. A warning to all those who will go to see this exhibition: watch your step!
