There is time until April 30, 2024, to participate in the photo contest organized by the City of Florence in collaboration with Fondation Folon on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the birth of Jean-Michel Folon (Uccle, 1934 - Principality of Monaco, 2005), the Belgian artist who was very attached to Florence, so much so that, in addition to the major exhibition held at Forte Belvedere in 2005, in the same year, the year also of his death, his wife donated ten bronze sculptures and two plaster casts to the City of Florence. In fact, the Tuscan capital is among the cities in the world where more of the artist’s works are kept: nine can be admired in the Giardino delle Rose, under Piazzale Michelangelo; in the courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi Sacrati, on the other hand, there is the bronze statue Walking, while on Lungarno Aldo Moro there is the bronze fountain Pluie - Rain. Finally, in Children and Girls of Beslan Square, there is The Man of Peace, purchased by the Rotary Club and then donated to the City of Florence also in 2005.

The contest is open to all lovers of photography, who can register for free and who can interpret the theme of the contest, Folon: between dream and reality, with maximum artistic freedom and expression. The goal is to raise awareness of the works of Jean-Michel Folon found in the municipal area and photograph them in their most artistic aspects. Photos must be submitted by April 30, 2024, following the procedures indicated in the rules available on the Municipality’s website.

The photos will be examined by a jury formed by the President and two members of the Board of Directors of the photographic group Il Cupolone APS of Florence, a representative of the Folon Foundation and a representative of the Municipality of Florence: it will have the task of identifying a congruous number of images (minimum 25 images) that will be printed, at the expense of the Municipality of Florence, and put on display during the awards event. From these, the three prize-winning works (first, second and third prize) will be selected. The award ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 3:30 p.m. at the Oblate Library in Florence, Via dell’Oriuolo 24, Sibilla Aleramo Room. Prizes of symbolic value, parchment and free admission to the Palazzo Vecchio museum for two people, will be presented by the City of Florence. During the awards ceremony, in addition to the display of the images selected for the exhibition, the images deemed most beautiful and significant will be projected.

Photo submission methods

The competition includes a single Section for digital files (no printed photos are allowed) and a single theme Folon: between dream and reality that can be interpreted by photographers with the utmost artistic freedom and expression. Both color and black-and-white photographs are allowed.
A maximum number of 8 images may be submitted for each author. On the photographs it is absolutely forbidden to affix the name or surname, signatures or initials, special marks, the title or any other information that could in any way lead to the identification of the author. Failure to comply with this rule will result in exclusion from the contest.
Images must be in jpg format, with the longest side size of 2500 pixels.
