Senigallia dedicates exhibition to Julia Margaret Cameron, first photographer admitted to Royal Photographic Society

The Duke's Palace in Senigallia is hosting an exhibition until Feb. 28, 2022, dedicated to Julia Margaret Cameron, a 19th-century British photographer and exponent of pictorialism. She was the first woman to be admitted to the Royal Photographic.

It opened to the public on Nov. 26 at the Palazzo del Duca in Senigallia and will remain open until Feb. 28, 2022, the exhibition Julia Margaret Cameron. A Look Out of Focus, curated by Massimo Minini and Mario Trevisan and supported by Regione Marche and Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi. The exhibition is part of Senigallia City of Photography.

On display is a nucleus of twenty-six shots by Julia Margaret Cameron from the collection of gallery owner Massimo Minini, which constitutes the largest nucleus to date in Italy. The exhibition aims to tell the story of Cameron’s photographic experience, which consists of bourgeois portraits, Pre-Raphaelite inspirations and the representation of literary scenes.

Julia Margaret Cameron, an English photographer and exponent of Pictorialism, was born in 1815 in Calcutta: she was the first woman to be admitted to the Royal Photographic Society. She discovered her passion for photography at the age of fifty, thanks to her daughter who gave her her first camera. The images depict thedreamy atmosphere of the Victorian age, with the characteristic “out of focus” highlighting the dreamy aspect typical of the taste of the time.

Among his most famous portraits are the one to Thomas Carlyle, Lord Alfred Tennyson, Robert Browning, and Henry Herschel, all of whom are featured in the exhibition.

Also part of the exhibition are photographs by Roger Fenton, Robert Adamson, and Oscar Gustave Rejlander, among the most important exponents at the origins of photography. Hailing from the curator’s personal collection, these photos give insight into the historical context in which Julia Margaret Cameron was active. Also from the same collection is a shot of Lewis Carroll, author of The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland, whose title character is inspired by Alice Liddell, one of the photographer’s models featured in the exhibition in the guise of ancient gods.

Hours: Wednesday and Friday 3 to 8 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 8 p.m. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
