Wiki Loves Monuments, the largest international monument photo contest kicks off

From September 1 to 30, 2020, everyone can participate in Wiki Loves Monuments to help circulate Italy's artistic beauty.

Do you want to illustrate the pages of Wikipedia? From September 1 to 30, 2020, everyone, professionals and amateurs alike, can participate in Wiki Loves Monuments, the largest international photographic competition of monuments, promoted by Wikimedia. The goal is to enhance Italy’s artistic heritage.

Everyone can contribute to the circulation of Italian artistic beauty: just register on the site of Wikimedia Commons, the archive of freely reusable images connected to Wikipedia, and upload from September 1 to 30 one or more photographs, each with its own title. Crucially, they must be Creative Commons BY-SA licensed shots, which is the free license adopted by Wikipedia.

Participation in the contest, now in its ninth year, is free.

Wiki Loves Monuments involves more than fifty nations and is promoted in Italy, since 2012, by Wikimedia Italia: in the past eight editions, the contest has collected a total of 145,000 photographs of 13,000 national monuments taken by 2,000 photographers.

To decide which monument to photograph, you can consult the list of authorized monuments at this link. Those who wish to immortalize a new monument can make the request to the relevant territorial body to allow a new entry in the authorized list (free of charge) and increase visibility opportunities for that city or territory.

Photographs participate in the national competition, as well as local competitions organized in different regions, including: Abruzzo, Basilicata, Liguria, Puglia, Tuscany, plus the interprovincial territory of Lake Como.

The national jury, led by Settimio Benedusi and made up of professional photographers and volunteers from the Wikimedia Italia community, will select the ten best shots that will be awarded during a ceremony in Rome in November at the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and will also go on to participate in the international competition.

Matteo Ruffoni, president of Wikimedia Italia, says,"Wiki Loves Monuments is the largest photographic competition of monuments in the world and I believe that for Italy it can represent a great opportunity. Our country is home to a great deal of the world’s existing artistic heritage. Monuments represent a good part of it and cover a time span that touches 3,000 years of history. With our works we also know that we have often conditioned the art of other countries. This contest helps to enhance them because bringing them online under a free license makes them accessible to all. We believe that our immense cultural heritage should be made available for all to appreciate."
