ICCROM, the International Center for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property, one of the top intergovernmental organizations dedicated to the protection of cultural heritage, has secured temporary headquarters in Rome thanks to an agreement with Italy, which reaffirms its commitment to the organization. ICCROM’s Director General, Aruna Francesca Maria Gujral, and the Government of the Italian Republic signed an agreement that ensures the temporary relocation of ICCROM’s headquarters, pending essential renovations affecting its historic headquarters, which is still located in Rome. The agreement, signed today in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Alexander Giuli, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Edmondo Cirielli, reinforces Italy’s consolidated and renewed support for ICCROM, which dates back to the 1957 agreement signed with UNESCO: the pact enshrines ICCROM’s legal status and the government’s commitment to provide a home for the center’s operations.
Under this agreement, ICCROM will move temporarily to the Complesso Monumentale di San Francesco a Ripa, located near its permanent headquarters in Rome’s Trastevere district. Coordinated by ICCROM and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, the move will ensure a smooth transition while safeguarding the organization’s institutional continuity and investing in its long-term capacity and infrastructure. The renovation of ICCROM’s historic headquarters will not only improve working conditions but also expand the institution’s capacity to serve its member states around the world through essential capacity building and technical assistance.
The temporary relocation, scheduled to begin in the coming months, paves the way for a revitalized and modernized headquarters: an inspiring space that will promote innovation and strengthen global engagement in the preservation and safeguarding of cultural heritage for lasting impact and responsible development, both for today and for future generations.
“On behalf of ICCROM, I am deeply grateful to the Italian Government for its continued and strengthened support, which enables ICCROM to continue its mission with renewed energy and vision,” stressed Director Gujral. “This Agreement not only guarantees the continuity of our work but also reaffirms Italy’s commitment to ensure that ICCROM is positioned at the forefront of global efforts to preserve and safeguard cultural heritage, recognizing its strategic role as an engine of sustainable development, an accelerator of economic growth and a promoter of social cohesion. With the launch of this new chapter, ICCROM renews its commitment to place cultural heritage and cultural diplomacy at the center of an integrated, innovative and transformative trajectory of change that benefits people, communities and the planet, today and for future generations.”
“The Italian government is committed to global action to promote peace, stability and sustainable development,” said Culture Minister Giuli. “The Ministry of Culture is providing its expertise and human resources to implement, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, international cooperation initiatives in the cultural sphere for the benefit of our partners, from Ukraine to Africa.”
In his remarks, Edmondo Cirielli, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, mentioned an upcoming multi-year regional program that ICCROM will lead, saying: “I welcome the signing of the agreement between the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and ICCROM, to which the Development Cooperation Agency has earmarked a contribution of 6 million euros for a regional project aimed at strengthening the capacity to preserve cultural heritage in Africa.”
