Genoa, a new exhibit at Palazzo Reale for Filippo Parodi's Metamorphoses

From March 30 to July 10, the four Metamorphoses, a Baroque masterpiece by Filippo Parodi, will be on public display in a new exhibit at Palazzo Reale, Genoa.

A new display for the Metamorphoses of Filippo Parodi (Genoa, 1630 - 1702), the great sculptor of the Genoese Baroque, preserved at the Palazzo Reale in Genoa. From Wednesday, March 30, to Sunday, July 10, 2022, the four sculptures, best depicting Venus, Adonis, Clytia and Hyacinth, masterpieces by Filippo Parodi (1630-1702), have in fact been rearranged according to a project conceived by architect Giovanni Tironi, which will allow people to discover them in the round, in a never-before-seen vision.

Since 1726 they have been placed on four pedestals in the Galleria degli Specchi, as an in-depth study of the Superbarocco project and as a section of the city exhibition I protagonisti. Masterpieces in Genoa between 1600 and 1750, they were placed in the Veronese Room for the first time, with the aim of suggesting a circular arrangement around a central element according to a renewed perspective and idea. Only on two occasions had the four works come down from their plinths, in 1942 to be sheltered in the so-called marble depository in the basement of the palace to escape aerial bombing and again in 1992 when they were displayed in the Salone da Ballo, on the occasion of the exhibition Genoa in the Baroque Age.

Among the most famous works of the artist’s production, the four figures certainly originated as a group, in the early 1680s and in any case before 1683, the year Filippo Parodi moved to the Veneto region. They summarize some of the founding features of the Baroque in Genoa, showing the strength of the Bernini models studied by Filippo during his two long sojourns in Rome, but they are welded to the Genoese dwelling that still preserves them and for which, in all probability, they were conceived. This is also why they have been chosen to represent one of the protagonists of the most celebrated artistic season in the history of Genoese art, within a review created with the aim of exalting precisely this distinctive trait of the heritage of the capital of the ancient Maritime Republic, a city of extraordinary patrician palaces and art collections of the highest order.

On Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at 4:30 p.m., Luca Leoncini, director of collections at the Museum of the Royal Palace, will lead a special and specific guided tour to sanction the opening of this important new exhibit, which will add further value to the collections of the patrician home. To participate, it is necessary to make reservations by emailing realeticket@wticket.it, show your Super Green Pass and wear the Ffp2 mask. The exhibition, which is included in the exhibition itinerary, can be visited with the museum ticket (from April 1, 2022, single ticket with the National Galleries of Palazzo Spinola for €10.00). If in possession of a ticket to the exhibition The Shape of Wonder at the Ducal Palace or a ticket to one of the other venues in the exhibition I protagonisti (Musei di Strada Nuova, Museo dell’Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti, Museo Diocesano, Palazzo Lomellino di Strada Nuova), admission to the Royal Palace alone will be €5.00.
