An ancient area of cultic character with inscriptions in Venetian characters discovered in Ponso (Padua)

Important archaeological discovery in Ponso, in the province of Padua: identified an area of cultic character, active as early as pre-Roman times and remaining relevant during the Roman period, with numerous stone artifacts bearing inscriptions in Venetian characters.

Important archaeological discovery in Ponso, in the province of Padua: during the works of Veneto Strade S.p.A. for the construction of the 1st functional lot of the New Regional Road 10 “Padana Inferiore” from Borgo Veneto to Carceri, an area of cultic character active already in pre-Roman times and remained relevant even during the Roman age has been identified, which is currently being investigated under the scientific direction of the ABAP Superintendence for the provinces of Padua, Treviso and Belluno.

The discovery involves numerous stone finds with inscriptions in Latin and, predominantly, Venetian characters. Many of these elements, which can be preliminarily dated between the fifth and fourth centuries B.C., were reused in the creation of a paved pavement with a still uncertain function, while others are still found to be located in their original position. According to early evidence, which is currently being studied, the pavement would have been built in the 1st century AD.

The first finds were identified during wartime clearance activities, initiating a series of in-depth stratigraphic assays. Finds unearthed include stone elements inscribed both in Latin and, especially, in Venetian characters. The inscriptions, some of which are engraved on three faces of the cippus, appear to be votive in character based on the initial epigraphic assessments made.

Subsequent excavation campaigns unearthed additional monumental structures with a rectangular plan, identifiable as temples. One of them shows typical elements of the peripteral model, with a row of columns arranged around the building.

The archaeological evidence that has emerged, later covered by significant flooding of the nearby Adige River, which in ancient times flowed through this area, suggests the existence of an area with frequentation of a cultic character, active as early as pre-Roman times, but with subsequent phases of use in Roman

Overall, the information gathered so far indicates a continuity of use of the site over time, accompanied by progressive transformations, rather than simple abandonment. In fact, the area seems to have maintained an important function even during the Roman period, although it took on different forms and meanings than the oldest phase. Archaeological investigations are still in progress and will allow more precise clarification of the organization of the complex and the different phases of its use.
