The Central Institute for Restoration has launched a two-year scientific project dedicated to the study and conservation of Etruscan archaeological artifacts seized in 2024 by the Carabinieri TPC Command in San Donnino, Città della Pieve (Perugia).

The Central Institute for Restoration has launched an articulated two-year scientific project dedicated to the study, research and conservation of Etruscan archaeological finds seized in 2024 by the Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Culturale (TPC) Command in San Donnino, Città della Pieve (Perugia).

Funded by the Directorate General of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape, the initiative integrates multidisciplinary expertise to maximize the documentary potential of the discovery. Activities already underway include high-definition digital documentation, three-dimensional scanning of the finds, advanced diagnostic investigations of the constituent materials, and targeted restoration work.

Special attention will be paid to the analysis of the original polychromes, still visible on some urns, and to the anthropological and biomolecular study of the human remains found inside the urns and sarcophagus. This research will provide new information about the gens Pulfna and Etruscan funerary practices. In addition to the recovery and preservation of archaeological heritage, the project aims to refine strategies for monitoring and combating illicit trafficking in archaeological goods.

The program takes shape thanks to the collaboration of several institutional bodies: the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio dell’Umbria, which is responsible for the protection activities on the territory; the Comando Carabinieri TPC, which after conducting the seizure now hosts the research, diagnosis and restoration phases at the via Anicia barracks; and the Direzione Generale ABAP, which ensures coordination between the scientific activities on the finds and the actions to protect the local archaeological heritage (RUP: Laura Moro; coordination: Federica Pitzalis and Sara Neri).
