Extraordinary discovery in Palermo: the ancient pavement of the square of the Royal Palace

Discovered in front of the Royal Palace of Palermo ancient pavement possibly predating 1570.

During some work on the sewage system in front of the Royal Palace in Palermo, an ancient pavement, probably dating back to before 1570, was found.

Announcing the significant archaeological discovery, since it would be the ancient paving of the square in front of the Royal Palace, was President of the Sicilian Regional Assembly Gianfranco Miccichè, who immediately alerted Palermo Mayor Leoluca Orlando and Superintendent of Cultural Heritage Selima Giuliano.

“We opened the excavation to put underground the rainwater sewer system with the sewer connection,” explained architect Pasquale Riggio of the Technical Office of the Regional Assembly, “and we found this pavement, very beautiful and intact, of a different material than the usual paving because it is a lighter-colored limestone earth.”

“It is an exciting discovery,” added Fabrizio Scimè, secretary general of the Ars, “but it does not surprise me, because in this legislature we have done so many interventions and each time we always discovered something, so much so that in our tenders we always provide for the presence of an archaeologist in addition to the advice of the Superintendence.”

Miccichè called this discovery extraordinary and as such the ancient pavement will not be covered.
