Herculaneum Archaeological Park, the Gem House reopens daily to the public

The Gem House in the Herculaneum Archaeological Park reopens to the public daily until June 3. The dwelling features mosaics of exceptional value.

The Herculaneum Archaeological Park reopens the Gem House to the public: it can be visited until June 3 every day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This expands the itinerary at the archaeological site. “We are looking forward to a spring of discoveries and events in the Park and in the area,” announced Park Director Francesco Sirano. “Everyone can become a protagonist of a knowledge experience that will be increasingly friendly and engaging.”

The Gem House, a mansion once overlooking the sea, features floor mosaics of exceptional value. Located at thesouthern end of Cardo V, the dwelling owes its name to the discovery of a jewel dating from the age of Claudius on which Livia’s face was engraved, mistakenly attributed to this house, when in fact it comes from the House of Granianus, which was once part of a single large domus overlooking the sea, probably belonging to the family of Marcus Nonius Balbus.

The House features in the triclinium one of the finest black-white geometric mosaics in the whole of Herculaneum.
