Following the agreement signed between the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, Ales S.p.A. and Valore Italia, a program of curricular training internships aimed at students in the degree course in Restoration of Cultural Heritage at the Botticino School of Restoration kicks off. The project got into full swing with the start of the first monitoring and maintenance activities of the decorative apparatuses within the active construction sites at the archaeological site. The first group, composed of two students, is already engaged indirect training experience, immersed in one of the most articulate and prestigious conservation contexts at the international level.
The internships will be organized in cycles lasting seven weeks, for a total of 250 hours each, involving a total of fourteen students. The initiative represents an important opportunity for learning in the field, in close contact with professionals engaged daily in the protection of Pompeii’s heritage. In this way, the students will be able to acquire technical skills, sharpen observation skills and develop a strong sense of responsibility, which are fundamental elements for their professional future. The archaeological site is configured as an open-air classroom.
During the course, students will be supported by the staff of Ales S.p.A., an in-house company of the Ministry of Culture with consolidated experience in the conservation of archaeological assets and planned maintenance activities at the Pompeian site. The work is carried out within a multidisciplinary team composed of archaeologists, architects, restorers, engineers and specialized workers, in constant collaboration with Park officials. The goal is to ensure the proper conservation of masonry structures and decorated surfaces, such as plaster, frescoes and mosaics.
This project contributes to strengthening the role of the Pompeii Archaeological Park not only as a place of protection and research, but also as a permanent space for professional training, where the transmission of skills becomes an integral part of cultural heritage conservation strategies.
“The conservation of archaeological heritage also passes through the training of new professionals. Pompeii has always been a training ground for scholars and researchers, an extraordinary laboratory where scientific rigor meets the daily practice of conservation. Welcoming students and young restorers means investing in the transmission of skills and strengthening collaborations that make the Park a place of shared growth,” said Gabriel Zuchtriegel, Director of Pompeii Archaeological Park.
“Offering our students the opportunity to train in such a prestigious context as the Pompeii Archaeological Park means putting in their hands an experience of high professional value. Here theoretical knowledge is confronted on a daily basis with the real complexity of conservation, allowing the students to grow in terms of responsibility and awareness of their role thanks to the guidance of the highly qualified ALES team that will support and guide them during these months,” said Salvatore Amura, CEO of Valore Italia - Botticino School of Restoration.
“With the launch of this training internship, Ales S.p.A. confirms the prominent position it has assumed in the field of scheduled maintenance services, which represent the first garrison in heritage conservation, and is committed to passing on to the students its exclusive skills, gained over more than ten years of experience in the service of such a priceless and highly complex wealth as that of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii,” concluded Ales S.p.A. President and CEO Fabio Tagliaferri.
