Rich program of initiatives to enhance the archaeological site of Gabii kicks off

A program of initiatives to enhance the archaeological area of Gabii, not far from Rome, kicks off June 6, 2021.

In order to enhance the archaeological site of Gabii, about sixty hectares surrounded by nature not far from Rome, the initiative Gabiinsieme - For an enhancement of the archaeological area of Gabii kicks off from June 6: seven total days until October 10, 2021 with guided tours, performances, children’s activities, and experimental archaeology workshops. Closed since the end of 2019, the archaeological site is entrusted to the Special Superintendence of Rome Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape, in the territory of the Municipality VI of the Towers.

The project is part of S.U.S.A. - Smart Urban Sustainable Area, which involves with Municipality VI and the Municipality of Frascati other important research institutions based in the area, such as the National Institute of Nuclear Physics, the National Institute of Astrophysics, ENEA, CNR and especially theUniversity of Tor Vergata. The Municipality VI has proposed, thanks to a path of collaboration already in place with the Special Superintendence of Rome Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape and the Department of History, Cultural Education, Heritage and Society of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata,” to allocate a part of the overall funding of S.U.S.A. for the enhancement of Gabii.

The enhancement of the archaeological area has kicked off with a memorandum of understanding between Municipality VI, Rome’s Special Superintendence for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape and the Department of History, Cultural Education, Heritage and Society of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” which provides for the improvement of the exhibition layout, the realization of cultural, educational-disclosure and promotional events.

“Archaeological and historical-artistic wonders are also outside the classical circuits of culture,” said Mayor Virginia Raggi. “The Gabii Archaeological Area is an excellent example of the treasures that Romans and tourists can discover in our suburbs. This very important project shows us how collaboration between institutions is essential to enhance the immense territory of our city. I would like to thank Roberto Romanella and Alessandro Marco Gisonda who with commitment and dedication together with Superintendent Daniela Porro, the University of Rome ”Tor Vergata“ have realized this important opening.”

"With Gabiinsieme, the Superintendence in synergy with the Municipality of Rome makes the archaeological area of the ancient city of Gabii once again accessible to the public," added Daniela Porro, Special Superintendent of Rome. “Seven days, from June to October, with guided tours, shows, children’s activities and experimental archaeology workshops that we hope will be the prelude to an ongoing activity within this archaeological site immersed in unspoiled nature. A collaboration, therefore, to be continued over time, which adds a valuable piece to the Soprintendenza’s other sites on the outskirts of the city, outlining an ideal ’alternative’ itinerary to discover places still little known in Rome.”

“For more than a decade, the Special Superintendence of Rome and the University of Rome ’Tor Vergata’ have initiated a joint research project in Gabii. During the various excavation campaigns, carried out in different parts of the Latin city, field training activities were also promoted for young archaeologists from various Italian and foreign universities. Many of them then chose to carry out their undergraduate, graduate or doctoral theses on topics related to the ancient Latin city,” said Professor Marco Fabbri, archaeologist of the Department of History, Cultural Education, Heritage and Society at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata.”
