From January 3, 2024, Pompeii Archaeological Park will open the construction site of the new Regio IX excavations to guided tours. Site staff will explain the main findings and environments that have emerged and the excavation methodology.

Pompeii Archaeological Park opens the construction site of the new Regio IX excavations to visitors from January 3. Every day, Monday through Friday at 11 a.m., groups of fifteen will be able to enter the area, with prior reservations at 3272716666, accompanied by site staff who will explain to visitors the main findings and environments that have emerged and the excavation methodology.

Investigations in Pompeii’s Regio IX, one of the nine quarters into which the site is divided, began in February 2023, in an area covering about 3,200 square meters. The project is part of a broader approach to rectify and solve the hydrogeological and conservation problems of the excavation fronts, i.e., the boundary between the excavated and unexplored parts of the ancient city. The latter amounts to about 22 hectares of blocks and houses still buried under lapilli and ash, almost a third of the ancient settlement.

Excavation in this area of Regio IX, along Nola Street, had begun in 1888 but was soon halted. After more than a century it was resumed, returning two atrium houses, already partially investigated in the 19th century, built in the Samnite age and transformed in the 1st century AD into manufacturing workshops. These were a fullonica (laundry) implanted in the atrium of the house at No. 2, with workbenches and tanks for washing and dyeing clothes, and a bakery with an oven, with spaces for millstones and rooms for processing food products for distribution in the city.

The visits, carried out by the staff working on the site, will focus on the illustration of the environments that emerged and the activities underway, with particular attention to aspects of the working methodologies of archaeologists and restorers and the techniques of investigation, aimed at the full recovery of the informative potential of the stratigraphy also through the application of multidisciplinary scientific investigations.

The duration of the visit is about 45 minutes. The reservation service is active, starting Jan. 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Meeting point: Via di Nola (northwest corner of Insula 10 of Regio IX, between Via di Nola and Vicolo dei Gladiatori).
