Maurizio Cattelan becomes patron, donates 30,000 euros to young artists at Carrara Academy and will set up a work with them

Maurizio Cattelan returns to the scene by becoming a patron, donating 30,000 euros in scholarships to the Carrara Academy, and will set up a work with students

A Maurizio Cattelan in unprecedented guise: the internationally renowned artist, born in Padua in 1960 and famous for works such as The Ninth Hour (the sculpture depicting John Paul II being hit by a meteorite), Him (Hitler in prayer), America (the all-gold toilet) and L.O.V.E. (the famous middle finger in front of the Milan stock exchange), in fact becomes a patron for young artists at theAcademy of Fine Arts in Carrara (read Finestre sull’Arte’sexclusive interview here ). On the occasion of his appointment as an honorary professor of the Academy, which will be celebrated next April 23, Cattelan decided to launch the Eternity project, which involves the awarding of twenty scholarships to as many young artists, worth 1,500 euros each, for a grand total of thirty thousand euros made available by the artist.

Cattelan, in particular, called on the students of the Academy, assisted by their professors, to try their hand at the theme of death: the task they were asked to do concerned the creation of objects related to funeral rituals, with the specification that they be related to artists of the past or present (funerary articles, cemetery accessories, tombstones, burial stones, obituaries, and so on). On each item, made of marble or any other material, will appear the name of the chosen artist and the dates of birth or death (for living artists, the presumed one).

The artist from Padua has selected twenty works from those produced, and these twenty works will go to make up a large installation-performance that will be set up in the gardens of the Academy of Fine Arts and inaugurated precisely on April 23, in the presence of Maurizio Cattelan. And meanwhile, anticipation is growing.
