Pistoia, restoration work completed on crucifix attributed to Giovanni Pisano

Restoration work on the 14th-century crucifix at San Bartolomeo in Pantano in Pistoia, attributed to Giovanni Pisano, ends.

Restoration work on the wooden crucifix attributed to Giovanni Pisano in the church of San Bartolomeo in Pantano in Pistoia has been completed: the work will return to the church. The work had begun after the sculpture was displayed at last year’s exhibition entitled Homage to Giovanni Pisano and set up in the spaces of Palazzo Fabroni, also in the Tuscan city.

The work, in particular, underwent disinfestation under nitrogen from woodworms (and the subsequent application of a product against xylophagous insects) and the stopping of the lifting of the pictorial layers. The intervention, supervised by ELena Bartolozzi, was decided by the City of Pistoia, the parish of San Bartolomeo and the Diocese of Pistoia in consultation with the Soprintendenza archeologia, belle arti e paesaggio for the Metropolitan City of Florence and the provinces of Pistoia and Prato.

The crucifix, dating back to the 14th century, is attributed to Giovanni Pisano but without unanimity among critics: for some it would in fact be the work of an artist close to the great sculptor’s manner, perhaps coming from his school.
