Coming to theaters a docu-film on Pompeii. Featuring Isabella Rossellini

A docu-film dedicated to the lesser-known and more secret sides of Pompeii arrives in Italian cinemas. Only on November 29, 30 and December 1.

Only on November 29, 30 and December 1 will the film Pompeii be shown in Italian cinemas. Eros and Myth, directed by Pappi Corsicato. Produced by Sky, Ballandi and Nexo Digital, in collaboration and with the scientific contribution of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii and with the participation of MANN, National Archaeological Museum of Naples, the film is a journey that takes the viewer back two thousand years in time. It will talk about the love story between Bacchus and Ariadne in the famous Villa of Mysteries, the relationship between Leda and the Swan, the struggles of the gladiators up to the search for immortality of Poppea Sabina (second wife of Emperor Nero): the docu-film will also stage and analyze the less known and more secret sides of Pompeii.

Leading the viewer through the city will be an exceptional narrator, the award-winning Isabella Rossellini, who will show how the myths and found works have captivated and influenced artists such as Pablo Picasso and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Also enriching the journey between history and art are contemporary re-enactments of myths conceived by Pappi Corsicato: Bacchus, Ariadne, Theseus, Leda, to name a few, wear modern clothes and are suspended in a time that belongs to both the past and the present.

The original score is by composer and pianist Remo Anzovino.

It was 1748 when King Charles III of Bourbon promoted the first official excavations in Pompeii after the first findings in nearby Herculaneum. From that time, details of the catastrophe of 79 A.D., when Vesuvius buried entire cities and the entire surrounding area, began to emerge with greater clarity. In the course of the excavations in Pompeii, treasures, statues, frescoes, mosaics, relics of everyday life, as well as villas and private dwellings were uncovered. It will be along these ancient streets and thanks to the works preserved at the MANN - National Archaeological Museum of Naples, that the viewer will get to know the life of the inhabitants of Pompeii before the eruption. A special focus will be devoted to the Secret Cabinet of the MANN, established by the Bourbons to guard the most “scandalous” and explicitly erotic finds.

Speakers in the docu-film include Massimo Osanna, director general of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii from 2014 to 2020; Andrew Wallace-Hadrill, professor emeritus of Classical Studies at the University of Cambridge; Catharine Edwards, professor of Classical Studies and Ancient History-Birkbeck at the University of London; Darius Arya, director of the American Institute for Roman Culture; and Ellen O’Gorman, associate professor of Classical Studies at the University of Bristol.
