Tonight on Rai1 Alberto Angela's highly anticipated unreleased special on Caravaggio

Tonight at 9:15 p.m. on Rai1 will air "Tonight with Caravaggio," the unreleased special on the great painter, hosted by Alberto Angela.

Alberto Angela ’s fans have waited a long time and even suffered a postponement, but finally tonight they will be able to watch Tonight with Caravaggio, the popular TV popularizer’s highly anticipated special on Caravaggio, which will air tonight, Wednesday, Dec. 16, on Rai1, at 9:25 p.m. During the program, Alberto Angela will recount the life and works of Michelangelo Merisi, with a journey of discovery of his art.

The story will start from Palo Laziale, in the town of Ladispoli, Caravaggio’s last landing place before his arrival in Porto Ercole, where the artist disappeared. Alberto Angela will take viewers on a journey back through the artist’s life, recounting his milestones and most significant moments. Indeed, of Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio, we know some moments, well documented in papers preserved in the State Archives at Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza: denunciations, seizures, contracts. But much remains to be known about the artist. What did Caravaggio do once he left Milan, before reaching Rome? Why did he have such stormy relations with the powerful people of the time who also admired him? Just the fault of his bad temper? And again: we do not know how he escaped from the prisons in Malta and, most importantly, the circumstances and causes of his death.

To try to answer the questions, Alberto Angela on Roman Night will go from Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza to the Galleria Borghese, where one of the world’s largest collections of Caravaggesque paintings is kept, and will explain how the painter made his paintings, helping himself with a mirror. Then the doors of the Casino dell’Aurora will be opened to see Caravaggio’s only mural painting, a surprising and little-known work. In the church of San Luigi dei Francesi Alberto Angela will meet a special guest, three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, who will talk about the influence the Vocation of St. Matthew has had on the way light is conceived in cinema. The church of Santa Maria del Popolo, and then Naples, Malta, Sicily: stages that a Caravaggio always on the run will pass through before landing in Palo Laziale and disappearing into thin air in Maremma.

Punctuating the tale will be “period testimonials”: Massimo Bonetti will play Giovanni Baglione, Caravaggio’s biographer and rival, and Anna Safronick will be Lena, the one who was the painter’s model and lover. Art historian Rossella Vodret, fencing master Renzo Musumeci Greco and historian and archivist Michele Di Sivo will speak as experts.
