Damien Hirst places monumental sculpture on frozen lake in St.Moritz

A monumental sculpture by Damien Hirst, The Monk, has been placed on the frozen lake in St.Moritz. It is part of the exhibition that will open in January 2021.

A monumental sculpture more than three meters high recently appeared on the frozen lake in St.Moritz: it is The Monk, a work created by British artist Damien Hirst in 2014 and exhibited in 2017 in Venice, on the occasion of the exhibition Treasures from the wreck of the Unbelievable set up between Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi.

The Monk rarepresents a cross-legged seated figure who wears his hands over his face and is one of the works that are part of the current St. Moritz diffuse exhibition project entitled The Mental Escapology, which can be visited from Jan. 19 to Feb. 23, 2021.

Curated by Jason Beard and organized by Oscar Humphries, the exhibition also includes as a location the famous ski resort’s Forum Paracelsus, an 18th-century building located in a former spa. On display in the neoclassical space are works from the Natural History series (animal bodies preserved in formaldehyde) and the photorealist painting Surgical Tools for Caesarean. In the downtown Protestant church, on the other hand, are the Kaleidoscope Paintings that refer to the spiritual symbolism of the butterfly and the Spot (Pharmaceutical) Paintings series.

Many of the works on display are loans from the artist himself, while others come from private collections. Humphries specified that the exhibition does not include works for sale. It is an exhibition solely for the public, Damien Hirst’s first in Switzerland.
