In the province of Vicenza, an old printing house is transformed into a contemporary art gallery

In Arzignano, in the province of Vicenza, an old print shop becomes a contemporary art gallery after a complete renovation of the space and a renewed identity.

From May 21, 2022, the new contemporary art gallery Atipografia, founded by Elena Dal Molin, will open its doors to the public in Arzignano, Vicenza, in the entirely renovated spaces after a restoration and functional redesign project of theold Arzignanoprint shop. Atipografia will offer exhibitions by artists of different generations and geographical origins. This dimension adds to and enriches the work Elena Dal Molin has conducted for years in support of contemporary arts and artists as a cultural association. The new identity complements and completes its vocation as a place for artists. The Atipografia project thus resumes its course with a renewed identity, thanks in part to the restyling and functional adaptation work begun on the eve of the pandemic, carried out by the AMAA studio.

Opening the new exhibition season will be Arcangelo Sassolino, with an art intervention designed specifically for Atipografia’s spaces. The exhibition entitled The Measureless Void opens on May 21 and will be open to the public until July 24, 2022: Sassolino’s imaginative machines, whose exhibition is produced by the cultural association Atipografia, will be displayed in the spaces of the gallery, which for a long time was a recognized print shop started by Elena Dal Molin’s great-great-grandfather. A story with ancient roots: in fact, Atipografia is based in the same spaces where for a long time a recognized typography in Arzignano was active. The spaces have hosted an independent cultural association and are now a gallery for contemporary art, restored by the restoration project signed by Studio AMAA. The architectural firm rewrote the existing 800 square meters: on the ground floor, an entrance garden that gives access to the exhibition area and a residence with two apartments; on the second floor, a roof garden and the gallery offices. Every detail has been carefully attended to, from the teak workshop floors from an early 20th-century Borneo elementary school that still bear traces and engraved lettering, to the handcrafted finishes.

The association has been active since 2014 as a nonprofit for artist residencies and site-specific projects. As Elena Dal Molin explains, “typography recalls the world of printing, of the written word. The addition of the alpha privative, in addition to the fact that it is no longer a typography, also represents something that is being told, something that has yet to be written. Something that is being accomplished, that is fluid, that is happening now. That is why the space stands as a place to come and also to stay.”
