The Quadriennale di Roma is launching the “Critical Writing Workshop,” an art criticism contest aimed at students from Rome’s fine arts academies (Ripetta, RUFA, NABA) and the capital’s universities (La Sapienza, Tor Vergata and Roma Tre). The competition is announced as part of Quotidiana, the ongoing exhibition program on contemporary Italian art at the Museo di Roma in Palazzo Braschi, promoted by the Quadriennale di Roma and Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Cultura - Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali.
The project, curated by the Artistic Direction of the Quadriennale, is one of the collateral initiatives of the Quotidiana exhibition cycle with the aim of promoting knowledge of some of the Foundation’s ongoing activities through an articulated experience: visiting an exhibition, studying in-depth materials, and elaborating an art criticism article. The workshop is particularly aimed at male and female students attending bachelor’s or master’s degree programs in one of the following areas: art history, film and media studies, performing arts studies, media sociology, information and publishing studies, cultural studies, curatorial studies, cultural management.
Participation in the workshop is free and by registration. There is time until Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024 to pre-register by sending an email to segreteria@quadriennalediroma.org. Completion of registration will be done by downloading a link with study materials and the participation form, to be returned completed. A tour of the Res gestae exhibition by Romeo Castellucci and Andrea Mastrovito currently underway at Palazzo Braschi in the “Landscape” section of the “Quotidiana” cycle, conducted by Gaia Bobò, curator of the Quadriennale, and Davide Lunerti, curator-in-residence, will be organized for those enrolled.
Participants, on the basis of the study materials provided by the Foundation and their visit to the exhibition, will then have to produce an in-depth article, arguing their own critical thought on the revival of classical tragedy in contemporary Italian art, focusing on the context on which the artists in the exhibition work. The texts produced will be sent to the Art Direction of the Quadriennale for revision in interlocution with the authors of the texts.
The workshop will award two types of prizes: publication of the most convincing texts (within a maximum of five) on the Quadriennale website, also translated into English, and a prize of 1,000 euros for the best text. All those who register for the workshop will be given a copy of the eight issues of the Quadriennale’s magazine “Quaderni d’arte italiana.” The workshop regulations are available at www.quadriennalediroma.org.
