The curator of the Italian Pavilion at the 2024 Biennale will be chosen by public selection

This is the first time in history that this has happened: the curator of the Italian Pavilion of the next Venice Biennale, the one in 2024, will be chosen by public selection, by a specific indication of the Ministry of Culture led by Gennaro Sangiuliano. Here are the requirements to apply.

The next curator of the Italian Pavilion at the 2024 Venice Biennale will be chosen by public selection. This was decided by the Ministry of Culture: the public notice for the selection of the trio of candidates from which the Minister of Culture will subsequently choose the curator of the Italian Pavilion at the next Art Biennale 2024 was published today on the website of the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity.

This is a novelty with regard to Italian participation in the Venice Biennale because it is the first time that public selection becomes the method for choosing the curator. The new procedure aims to broaden the pool of candidates and applicants for the curatorial position in the world’s most prestigious contemporary art exhibition, as well as to ensure the widest transparency in the procedures, indicating in the public notice clear criteria for evaluating the professional and curatorial profiles of the candidates, as well as the scientific proposals for the Pavilion. Among the requirements is that of five years’ experience, a significant amount of time but one that “will allow many talented young people to take part in the selection, in accordance with a precise policy of the Minister of Culture,” the Directorate General announced in a note.

Eligible to participate in the public selection, for the 2024 edition, are Italian curators working both in Italy and abroad, and non-Italian curators working in Italy, or otherwise working predominantly on Italian artists (including in the form of curatorial collectives), who possess significant and qualified curatorial and professional experience in contemporary art in the national and international spheres, as well as established scholarly experience.

The curatorial proposals required of candidates and applicants must return a particularly innovative and unconventional vision of contemporary Italian art, both from a creative and content point of view. The scholarly project should present a survey of Italian contemporary art research and practices and their ability to confront the most pressing issues in Italian society and culture today, also with the ambition of stimulating a debate at the national and international level, including the role Italy can play globally in the field of contemporary visual art.

Applications can be submitted no later than June 15, 2023, 12:00 p.m. (Italian time) and sent exclusively through the DGCC’s Calls Portal by following the instructions in the call and the portal itself.

The selection procedure is in two stages: in the first stage, interested parties meeting the requirements set out in the call submit an application for participation in the selection with an initial concept containing the general and synthetic characters of the proposal, attaching CV and a motivational letter with which to support their application and express their idea for the Italian Pavilion. The Selection Committee evaluates the requirements and the outline project idea on the basis of criteria identified in the call and selects ten candidates with the best profile and the most interesting idea who will be asked to send a project dossier within thirty days.

In the second phase, the selected curators send the in-depth dossiers that will have to contain all the details of the proposal with particular attention to the exhibition project, economic framework and timetable. Again based on the criteria identified in the call for proposals, the Commission also evaluates the proposals in terms of concreteness, feasibility, environmental impact, budget submitted, and international competitiveness. The Selection Committee then prepares a final triad that the Director General Contemporary Creativity and Commissioner of the Italian Pavilion will submit to the Minister. The Minister, having heard the Commissioner, will identify the most suitable proposal and award the commission for the curatorship of the Italian Pavilion. The names of the commissioners will be announced after the deadline for applications. For those who would like to try, all info is on the https://creativitacontemporanea.cultura.gov.it/padiglioneitalia2024-opencall/ website.
