A new festival all about photography: the Torino Foto Festival is born

A new festival entirely dedicated to photography is born: from May 2 to June 2, 2024, Turin will host the first edition of EXPOSED Torino Foto Festival, with temporary exhibitions, meetings, talks and various events in the city's main cultural institutions.

From May 2 to June 2, 2024, Turin will host the first edition of EXPOSED Torino Foto Festival, Turin’s new International Festival of Photography. For this year, the Festival will focus on the theme New Landscapes - New Landscapes, offering a reflection on today’s evolution of the photographic medium and the main challenges and innovations in the world of images, through a program of temporary exhibitions, meetings, talks and various events in the city’s main cultural institutions.

Promoted by the City of Turin, the Piedmont Region, the Turin Chamber of Commerce, Intesa Sanpaolo, Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo and Fondazione CRT in synergy with Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT and organized by Fondazione per la Cultura Torino, EXPOSED was created to emphasize the city’s cultural and artistic vocation, which sees in initiatives related to creativity and innovation some of the main engines of development and factors of growth, not only touristic, of the territory.

The Artistic Direction was selected through an international public procedure and entrusted to Menno Liauw and Salvatore Vitale, respectively Director and Artistic Director of FUTURES - an international platform comprising nineteen major European art institutions with impact and influence in the world of photography.

At the Gallerie d’Italia in Turin, Dutch designer and researcher Simone C. Niquille presents Beauty and The Beep, a short film made with innovative tools that aims to reflect on the co-existence of people, data and technological processes resulting from computer vision embedded in domestic robots. Inspired by the enchanted everyday objects from the popular fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Niquille aims to stage a story featuring a humanized chair and the attempts it makes, in an ironic and grotesque way, in an attempt to sit down.

Enriching and completing the calendar will be a series of meetings, educational activities and participatory events, as well as symposia for contemporary photography professionals-a program designed by EXPOSED to engage both insiders and enthusiasts, integrating old and new languages.

The talk program, curated by the Artistic Director, will take place on May 3 and 4 at the various locations: meetings reflecting on photography and the world of the contemporary image. Starting with the title of this first edition of EXPOSED New Landscapes - New Landscapes, the conversations will explore four thematic areas in particular: Ethics and Politics of Representation; New Landscapes: Artificial Intelligence, Technology and Images; Diffusion and the Photographic Industry; and Artist Talks: In Transition. The protagonists of the talks are curators, artists involved in the Festival and leading figures in the world of photography, moderated by journalists, photoeditors and professionals, both locally and internationally, able to return from different perspectives the ever-growing role and impact of photography in the world.
