Simone Menegoi is the new director of ArteFiera, Bologna's major contemporary art fair. He succeeds Angela Vettese.

Simone Menegoi is the new director of ArteFiera, the major contemporary art fair (the longest running in Italy) held every year in Bologna. The long-awaited announcement was made in the past few hours by the Bologna Fair.

Simone Menegoi succeeds Angela Vettese, who had directed the important Bologna event for the past two years. The goal: to relaunch the event, and Menegoi has all the credentials to succeed. Born in 1970, Milanese, a critic and independent curator, Menegoi is mainly interested in sculpture: after starting out as a journalist, collaborating with art and design magazines and the Corriere della Sera, in 2005 he began his own activity as a curator, working with public and private institutions such as the Marino Marini Museum in Florence, the Milan Triennale, the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation, the David Roberts Art Foundation in London, the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, and the Extra City Kunsthal. Last year, as part of ARTCITY, the schedule that accompanies Arte Fiera in Bologna, Menegoi curated the first Italian solo exhibition of Canadian artist Erin Shirreff. Menegoi also has experience with fairs, having collaborated in the past with Artissima in Turin.

“Arte Fiera,” Menegoi commented, “is the first and longest-running modern and contemporary art fair in Italy. Bologna is going through a particularly lively artistic and cultural season; I would like Arte Fiera to succeed in being the catalyst for the city’s renewed energies. My first commitment will be to spend as much time as possible in the city, to get to know it even better and to make myself known.” The new director will work together with Lorenzo Balbi, artistic director of MAMbo as well as curator (also confirmed for 2019) of the ARTCITY program. “My commitment to the artistic direction of ARTCITY, which I curated with enthusiasm in the 2018 edition and for which we are already working on new and ambitious projects for 2019,” Balbi wrote on his Facebook profile, “goes in the direction of a closer relationship between the Fair and the City.” Balbi went on to reiterate his “full availability to collaborate with the new management on shared projects for the good of ArteFiera, MAMbo and the entire contemporary art system in Bologna.”

In 2019, ArteFiera will be held from February 1 to 4.
