Colosseum Archaeological Park celebrates Roman orator Hortense with historical re-enactment event

On the occasion of International Women's Day, the Colosseum Archaeological Park celebrates with a historical re-enactment event at the Curia Iulia the Roman orator Hortensia.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Colosseum Archaeological Park will present a historical re-enactment event dedicated to the figure of Hortense, a Roman orator who lived in the first century B.C. and was famous for giving anoration before the triumvirs in 42 B.C. The event titled The First Voice - Hortense and the Legacy of Her Oratory is scheduled for Friday, March 8, 2024 at 3:30 p.m. at the Curia Iulia, the ancient seat of the Roman Senate assemblies. It is sponsored by the Colosseum Archaeological Park, the Ministry of Culture, Italian Museums and the Chair of the Culture, Science and Education Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, under the patronage of the Department of Culture of Roma Capitale.

The historical re-enactment will be an opportunity to enhance Roman culture, with a special focus on the history of women’s rights. TheAssociation IDS - Imprenditori di Sogni, directed by Yuri Napoli, oversaw the production of the event, with Maria Rita Leonardi, a member of the board of the Roman Historical Group, who produced the texts, and actress Beatrice Rincicotti in the role of the protagonist Ortensia.

The enhancement of historical re-enactment, an increasingly relevant issue that also figures in proposed laws for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage, is part of a broader program aimed at the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage. This program aims to promote knowledge and appreciation of the history, characters and traditions that have helped enrich the social and cultural fabric of past generations.

“We have approved in the House a bill to protect and highlight the full potential of historical re-enactment, an element of cohesion and national identity,” said Federico Mollicone, chairman of the House Culture Committee and among the first signatories of the Bill for the Protection of Historical Re-enactment. “We hope for final approval in the Senate as soon as possible. The initiative of the Roman Historical Group for International Women’s Day perfectly captures the values that make this intangible cultural heritage of inestimable greatness. The important educational function related to the theme of women’s recognition in the world of work is enhanced by the place where the re-enactment will be held, creating a true virtuous circuit of historical insight and enhancement of the cultural asset.”

“International Women’s Day offers a unique opportunity to celebrate not only the past achievements of women, but also to reflect on current and future challenges,” said Colosseum Archaeological Park Director Alfonsina Russo. “As the Colosseum Archaeological Park, we continue to value initiatives that bring to life the history and legacy of personalities who have left an indelible imprint on our culture. The historical re-enactment we will experience in the Curia Iulia on March 8 not only honors the memory of an extraordinary historical figure like Hortense, but also allows us to explore the crucial role of women in Roman history and culture. It is a significant time to promote their invaluable contribution to society.”

"Realizing the event La Prima Voce, Hortensia and the legacy of her oratory in the headquarters of the Curia Iulia is a moment of great significance for Gruppo Storico Romano," added Sergio Iacomoni, President Gruppo Storico Romano, and Andrea Buccolini, External Relations Manager Gruppo Storico Romano. “We would like to warmly thank all our members for their commitment and dedication, which made possible the realization of such an important event on International Women’s Day. The choice of such an evocative venue added an additional symbolic and historical dimension to our celebration, and we are deeply grateful to all those who contributed to its success. Special thanks go to the artistic direction of Entrepreneurs of Dreams and the direction of Yuri Napoli, who skillfully guided and enriched the overall experience of the event.”
