Miart returns to Milan. The 2022 edition is Italy's first art fair of the year

From April 1 to 3, 2022, miart, the international modern and contemporary art fair organized by Fiera Milano, returns, confirming the announced dates and repositioning itself as per tradition in spring. It is the first art fair of 2022 in Italy and among the first in Europe.

miart, the international modern and contemporary art fair organized by Fiera Milano, is back, confirming the announced dates and repositioning itself as per tradition in spring. The 2022 edition, scheduled from April 1 to 3, with a VIP preview on March 31, is number twenty-six and for the second consecutive time is directed by Nicola Ricciardi (read the interview after miart 2021 here). Just seven months after the 2021 edition, which was exceptionally organized in September, with 150 galleries operating from 21 countries, miart will chronologically be the first art fair of 2022 in Italy and among the first in Europe: an unmissable appointment for the public and Italian and international collectors in search of the great masterpieces of the early 20th century as well as the creations of the latest generations of artists and auteur design.

Three sections into which the 150 galleries from 21 countries are organized: Established, the main section of miart that hosts, for the first time together, galleries exhibiting works of the closest contemporary and those devoted to the art of the 20th century, not neglecting those active in the field of collectible and auteur design, thus proposing a selection that ranges from the masters of the 20th century to the most recent; Decades, curated by Alberto Salvadori, explores the history of the last century through monographic projects from the 1910s to the 2000s; Emergent, curated by Attilia Fattori Franchini, is the section devoted to young galleries whose programming focuses on the latest generations. The projects, carefully selected by the committee, aim to present a coherent and accurate fair, promote dialogue among galleries and between iconic artists and new talents, and exalt tradition with an eye toward the future.

First Movement (the theme chosen for this edition) naming the beginning of a “multi-part musical form,” represents the desire to accelerate an industry that now, after a successful fall season of international fairs, feels ready to lengthen its stride and leap forward. It will be precisely this term that will define a series of initiatives and collaborations with realities and institutions belonging to the world of music, dance, and performance, aimed at making miart first and foremost a stimulus to move, all together - gallery owners, collectors, artists, citizens and visitors - in search of the perfect execution of a symphony possible only through collaboration and cohesion.

The link with the city

The bond of miart with the city is strengthened, thanks to a new and dense edition of Milano Art Week, the popular event (developed in collaboration with the Culture Department of the City of Milan) that celebrates the city’s leading public institutions and private foundations. Indeed, all the season’s major exhibitions will open during miart, including solo shows by Elmgreen & Dragset at Fondazione Prada, Artur Zmijewski at PAC (Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea), Yuli Yamagata at Ordet and Steve McQueen at Pirelli HangarBicocca. It will also be possible to visit exhibitions already open in the city, such as the large group show on Titian and his peers at Palazzo Reale, Anicka Yi at Pirelli HangarBicocca and Miriam Cahn at Fondazione ICA.

The full calendar of initiatives will soon be available on the miart website. More information about partnerships, special projects, prizes and more will be announced at a press conference scheduled for early March 2022.
