From May 9 to 11, 2025, Milano Scultura returns to Villa Bagatti Valsecchi in Varedo. Directed by Ilaria Centola and curated by Valerio Dehò, the event now in its ninth edition brings together about thirty selected galleries that focus on sculpture through works ranging from traditional materials-such as marble, bronze and ceramics-to salvaged materials. A multiplicity of approaches is also reflected in the size and typology of the works, which range from small format to environmental installation, from art object to public art project, to offer an overview of the infinite declinations of the sculptural language.
Milano Scultura is the only fair in Italy dedicated to plastic arts and is both an exhibition and an exhibition project. No booth, but a single large set-up in order to place the works in dialogue with each other and with the environments of the villa, an eclectic residence of the late 18th century. An exhibition mode that intends to enhance the interaction between sculpture and architectural spaces. “In fact, the spirit of sculpture is to live not of absolute but of continuous relationship with the spaces, the environment, the architectures. In this Villa Bagatti Valsecchi offers various scenarios and various possibilities, the variety of interior spaces, the landscape perspectives, the different architectural structures, need an always different conjugation of the works,” explains Valerio Dehò.
“The aim is to offer a wide audience a carefully selected overview of what the medium of sculpture can offer today,” commented Ilaria Centola. Alongside the exhibition projects presented by the galleries, the event will promote meetings, performances and two special projects.
The Afthonia exhibition features an anthological exhibition dedicated to Matteo Lo Greco, with fifteen significant sculptures from his production from the 1980s to the present. Lo Greco weaves past and present, recovering the classical technique of lost-wax casting to give life to female figures that combine ancient elegance and contemporary irony: round, welcoming bodies celebrated with respect and lightness.
The second focus is on Henri Beaufour, an artist who develops a personal language defined as “Baroque expressionism.” A selection of small- and medium-format works allows us to capture the intensity and imprint of his poetics, enhanced by the intimate dimension while not losing its vitality.
Accompanying the event will be a catalog, published by NFC Edizioni, with a text by Valerio Dehò guiding the discovery of the themes and the protagonist artists.
