Pinocchio turns 139 and becomes ... the Magnificent in a short film

The famous puppet turns 139 years old today, and the Carlo Lorenzini Pinocchio Cultural Association is celebrating him with two videos aimed at inclusion.

Today Pinocchio turns 139 years old: it was July 7, 1881 when The Story of a Puppet was published in the Children’s Newspaper, which introduced the world to the most beloved and famous puppet.

This year’s Happy Birthday Pinocchio event, organized by theCultural Association “Pinocchio di Carlo Lorenzini” and dedicated to children, will not be held because of the health emergency; “to make Pinocchio’s nose fit inside the mask would have been really problematic,” jokingly commented Monica Baldi, President of the Pinocchio di Carlo Lorenzini Association.

However, the birthday of the famous puppet will be celebrated with the presentation of two videos made as part of the two-year Campo dei Miracoli project, aimed at enhancing the abilities of people with intellectual and relational disabilities by building growth paths that contribute to a process of inclusion, socialization, responsibility and self-esteem.

The first video, entitled Puppet Theater, testified to the guided tours and workshop activities conducted during the course of the project in the different partner nations. The video highlighted the connection between community gardens and horticultural realities in Florence, Madrid and Liverpool and historic Florentine, Spanish and English gardens, focusing on Carlo Lorenzini and the adventures of his Pinocchio, the central theme of the project. The second video is a trailer for a short film entitled Pinocchio the Magnificent, which will be presented exclusively at upcoming competitions for short films starring people with disabilities.

Both videos can be viewed on Campo dei Miracoli’s Youtube channel.

“Once again this year we pay homage to Pinocchio,” added Monica Baldi, “who accompanies us on a special European journey, starting from his ”daddy’s" hometown, Florence, and arriving in Madrid and then Liverpool, creating new exciting adventures conveyed in the project video and short film Pinocchio the Magnificent. The active participation of the partners of the Erasmus Plus project “Campo dei Miracoli” made it possible to film the real work done, to succeed in making the wooden puppet become a child, in an extraordinary and enchanting path of workshops and activities for people with and without intellectual disabilities, highlighting the importance of increasingly spreading a culture of inclusion and social participation."

The Campo dei Miracoli project, between 2017 and 2019, enjoyed the Patronage of the Municipality of Florence and the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, was developed in the Erasmus plus program (2016/C 386/09) Cooperation for innovation and exchange of good practices, strategic partnerships in education, training and youth and was curated by the associations of Italy, Spain and Great Britain: “Per Boboli,” “Pinocchio by Carlo Lorenzini,” “Trisomy 21 Onlus,” “Fundacion Menuhin Espana,” “Universidad Rey Juan Carlos” (URJC) and MBM Training and Development Center LTD.
