100 iconic, never-before-seen Steve McCurry shots on display at Cuneo's old silk factory

The Caraglio Spinning Mill in Cuneo is hosting the exhibition "Steve McCurry. Texture": one hundred iconic and previously unseen photographs will be on display in an itinerary related to the ancient silk mill and the weaves of textiles preserved by the Antonio Ratti Foundation.

From Sept. 29, 2022, to Jan . 29, 2023, the exhibition Steve McCurry . Texture, curated by Biba Giacchetti with the contribution of Maddalena Terragni; it is promoted and realized by Fondazione Artea, in collaboration with Fondazione Filatoio Rosso, Civita Mostre e Musei, Sudest57 and Fondazione Antonio Ratti, under the patronage of the Municipality of Caraglio, the contribution of Fondazione CRC and Fondazione CRT, and with the support of Banca di Caraglio.

One hundred photographs, including iconic and unpublished images, will be on display in an exhibition itinerary related to theold silk factory and the weaves of the textiles preserved by the Antonio Ratti Foundation. The spaces of the old silk factory will come alive through plots of life, imprinted in the one hundred shots from around the world taken by the famous American photographer and humanist, with the textiles and history of the place, a former silk factory now a “cultural factory.”

“The exhibition,” explains the curator, "investigates the intrinsic relationship between human beings and the way they dress, style themselves and appear, through a selection of 100 shots by the famous American photographer and humanist that have fabric as their focus, in an exhibition path that interweaves visual and emotional storylines. A narrative that starts with a section devoted to manufacturing and production, which in each country, due to tradition and availability, uses different means and tools of making, but at the same time is similar in themanual and creative approach to continue with a gallery of McCurry’s most celebrated portraits, in which people proudly express their ’being,’ as much in rich Tibetan clothing as in the simpler conditions of Afghan refugees, such as the much-loved Sharbat Gula. Finally, the exhibition allows visitors to rediscover all the famous icons shot by McCurry, in a true retrospective of his many projects."

The exhibition itinerary will be enriched by some of the most significant fragments of the Antonio Ratti collection: technical papers related to textile production, ancient Chinese velvets and damasks, embroidered panels from the Kuba culture of Congo, Japanese reserve print matrices, Turkish velvets, ikat fabrics from Central Asia, colorful garments from Central America and a significant section of 18th-century European silks that will be placed in dialogue with Steve McCurry’s photographs.

“Thus is born a narrative capable of enveloping in its aesthetic form and projecting the imaginary into a space inhabited by the reflections propagated by artistic forms that merge and become complementary here,” concludes Maddalena Terragni, head of the Antonio Ratti Foundation’s Textile Collection and Programming.
