An exhibition at Palazzo Braschi reflects on hyperconnection with duo Eva & Franco Mattes

From Jan. 20 to March 12, 2023, the Museum of Rome at Palazzo Braschi is hosting an exhibition by artistic duo Eva & Franco Mattes to reflect on hyperconnectedness. It is part of a project conceived and produced by the Quadriennale di Roma.

The Museo di Roma in Palazzo Braschi is hosting the third exhibition of Paesaggio, a section of the Quotidiana exhibition cycle, conceived and produced by the Quadriennale, in collaboration with Roma Culture, Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, to explore some significant directions inItalian art of the 21st century. Within Paesaggio, every two months six curators (three Italians and three foreigners) reflect on artistic trajectories of particular interest through a critical text and an exhibition composed of a few essential works.

On view from Jan. 20 to March 12, 2023, the current exhibition is dedicated to the artistic duo Eva & Franco Mattes (Brescia, 1976) and stems from a reflection by Nadim Samman, curator at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, who identifies the duo’s research as one of the most interesting lines in the Italian art scene of the 21st century. Eva & Franco Mattes were in fact among the first to question the implications ofhyperconnection and the tensions generated by the interference between online and offline dimensions.

The video installations belonging to the series The Bots (2020), are made from a series of interviews aimed at moderators of content on the web of major social media: this work was not completely automated, and still relies on the mediation of human arbitrariness. A group of actors is called upon to read these interviews while simulating the recording of a make-up tutorial, a gimmick often used on the web to circumvent censorship of otherwise unbroadcastable content. Random makeup tips pace and intersperse the flow of a discourse that addresses issues of onlineabuse and violence. The videos are projected on the back of the same desks used in Facebook’s moderators’ office in Berlin.

The exhibition has free admission and no reservations.

Hours: Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
